The above paintings were executed on ricepaper using ink, bamboo brush, watercolor and pastel.
The subject matter of these and other of the artist's freshwater paintings has been influenced by Diane Lundegaard's work as an environmental educator at the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium, Long Island, NY and canoe trips on the Island's rivers and lakes.
It is the current understanding of the artist that there are few painters whose work concentrates on the submerged aquatic environment in an interpretive rather than illustrative manner.   There are many excellent botanical and zoological painters, however, committment to scientific realism charts their course.  In  Lundegaard's work, a lyrical, metaphorical sway modifies realism so that the imagery of this particular ecology may linger in the viewer's heart and soul.
